Africa has contributed to the beautiful game of football in various ways, producing some of the best footballers who thrilled fans with their amazing skills and talents from different parts of the world. The likes of George Weah, Samuel Eto, Didier Drogba, Jay-Jay Okocha, Yaya Toure, all have something in common – they are superb football stars who had a swell time in Europe, and they are Africans!

Till this moment, there are various talented stars of African origin doing beautifully well in some of the best European football leagues like the English Premier League, the Italian Serie A, the German Bundesliga, the Spanish La Liga, and so on. Nevertheless, we should also note that some of these African stars started from somewhere; they started from an African club before making a big move abroad.

Next is Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly, a club that is the most decorated one in the continent.  Al Ahly was established in Egypt as far back as 1907, and the club keeps growing in influence and success. Here is a side that has won over 120 official trophies (out of which 19 are international ones). The club was crowned the Africa Club of the Century back in 2000 and is also regarded as the most successful football club in the universe (due to the high number of international trophies it has won).

  • 2. Esperance de Tunis – Tunisia

Esperance de Tunis is inarguable the best club in Africa as things stand now. The Tunis based club was established in January 1919 and has the reputation of being one of the oldest clubs the continent has. Famously called Esperance, the Tunisian side has won their local league a whopping 26 times and has also been crowned African Champions on two different occasions. Additionally, they have won the Tunisian Cup fourteen different times as well as the Tunisian Super cup twice. 

Esperance has one of the best stadiums in the continent – the Stade Olympique d’El Menzah and has high followership of fans and supporters. The club has won the Arab Club Championship Cup on two different occasions and has also won the Arab Super Cup once. 

 

TP Mazembe
  • 3. TP Mazembe – Congo DR

Tout Puissant Mazembe is one of the most organized and most standard clubs in Africa, and so, has a reputation in the continent. The club was established in Congo and used to be known as Englebert before settling for what it is currently called – TP Mazembe.

TP Mazembe is one of the most successful clubs in Africa, and it is based in Lubumbashi. The club is one of the African sides that can boast about earning huge revenue each year (they earn up to €14 million annually). 

Al-Merrikh SC Sudan
  • 4. Al-Merrikh Sudan

Next is Al-Merrikh, a Sudanese club that has been dominating Sudan’s local league for some time now. Established as far back as 1908 (which made the side one of the oldest clubs in the continent),  Al-Merrikh has won the country’s top-flight at 18 different times. The club has a reputation of being the first side to be crowned champions of the Sudan football championship back then in the year 1934.

The Tunisian side is one of the best clubs in the country that entertains fans with beautiful football. The club is one of the most successful clubs, not only in Tunisia but in the whole of Africa. Here is a side that has won the domestic trophy on ten different occasions and has won the CAF Super Cup title on two different occasions. 

Étoile du Sahel has won the CAF Champions League once as well as the CAF Confederation Cup twice. The club has a lot of supporters and fans in Tunisia and is reputed as one of the most valuable football clubs in the continent. Interestingly, the club was the first from Tunisia to play in the FIFA Club World Cup and the second African side to reach the FIFA Club World semi-final. 

  • 6. Al-Hilal Omdurman – Sudan 

Al Hilal Educational Club, popularly called Al-Hilal Omdurman or just Al-Hilal Club, was founded in Sudan back then in 1930. The club is based in Omdurman and is also nicknamed The Leader of the Country in English. The side has one of the biggest stadiums in the continent – the Al-Hilal Stadium with a capacity that is as huge as 65,000. 

  • 7. El Zamalek – Egypt 

The tenth club on the list is El Zamalek – an Egyptian football club that has become one of the most successful in the country. The club was founded in Egypt years back and is based in Giza. 

El Zamalek has won the Egyptian Cups on 22 different occasions – one of the clubs in the country that has won it the most times. Additionally, the club can boast of having 11 League titles. 

Outside Egypt, the club has won the CAF Champions League titles on five different occasions, as well as the CAF Super Cup thrice. They are a professional club that plays beautiful football and is always keen on victory. 

  • 8. Wydad Athletic Club – Morocco 

Also known as Wydad of Nation, Wydad Athletic Club is a Moroccan side that has won the highest number of titles in the country’s domestic league. Wydad Athletic Club has won 48 titles in Morocco since it was founded, and it is based in Casablanca.

The club has the Moroccan league title twenty times, the Moroccan Cup on nine different occasions, the Moroccan Super Cup on eight different occasions, the CAF Champions League twice, the CAF Super Cup once, and so on. 

  • 9. Mamelodi Sundowns

Based in Gauteng province, Tshwane in South Africa. Mamelodi Sundowns was founded in 1960 and currently plays in the first tier of the SA football league, the PSL, Premier Soccer League.

  • 10. CS Sfaxien

Based in Sfax, Tunisia, CS Sfaxien is founded in May 28th, 1928.

  • AS Vita Club – Congo DRC

Association Sportive Vita Club, simply known as AS Vita Club, is based in Congo and established as early as in 1935. The side is not only one of the oldest clubs in Congo but is also one of the most successful – as it has won the Coupe du Congo on nine different occasions, as well as the Linafoot 12 times. 

  • 1º de Agosto – Angola 

 1º de Agosto is an Angolan club that was established in 1977. The club is being majorly sponsored by the Angolan armed forces and is one of the most successful sides in the country. 

The club plays at the local level, in competitions organized by the Angolan Football Federation – the domestic top flight, the Angola Cup as well as the Angola Super Cup. 1º de Agosto first won the Angolan League for the first time in 1979. The club also represents Angola in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup (which are organized by the African Football Confederation).

In conclusion, there are some other superb clubs in Africa that are doing great but just couldn’t make this list as at now (they would have been included if the list is top 15). For instance, the likes of Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa is a superb club that is dominating the South African football and plays at Soccer City in Soweto. Another is Raja Casablanca of Morocco, founded in 1949 and one of the best sides in Morocco. The club has won the Moroccan domestic title on ten different occasions and also played in the FIFA World Club Championships back then in 2000.

Although there are tons of clubs in Africa at the moment, it can’t be doubted that these ones are outstanding and superb. With more strategic works, we expect some of them to begin going shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the top teams in Europe.
