How To Track Your Nigerian Passport Application Status (2024)

The Nigerian international passport is something every Nigerian citizen should strive to have, as there are numerous benefits attached to possessing one. If you’ve got an international Passover, you can easily travel to various countries with it as long as you have your visa with you.

In fact, there are some countries that will allow you access into their territories without the need for a visa as far as your international passport is with you. So, with your Nigerian passport, you can explore a different culture and live your dreams.

Additionally, there are some job opportunities you might not be considered for if you don’t have a Nigerian international passport. For instance, if you find yourself in some countries and you intend to work there as a foreigner, you might need to present your passport before they can bring you in. Everyone should know already that there are various means of identification right now, but many can be forged.

However, it is not quite easy to forge an international passport, as you could be easily discovered. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with ensuring one will get their passport as soon as possible.

How To Track Your Nigerian Passport Application Status

You should note that after applying for a passport, you won’t be given instantly, but there are some processes that must be taken first. Therefore, after applying, you have the liberty to track your Nigerian Passport Application Status.

This is meant to make things easier for you, and to ensure that you will know the stage your application is at the moment. By so doing, you won’t need to be lost in regards to where your passport is, how soon it will be ready, as well as other important information you should know about your document.

Also, the Nigerian international passport comes in two types. There are the 32-page and the 64-page, depending on your needs. If you are someone who usually travels once in a while, you can simply opt for their former. However, if you travel occasionally, you might need to get the latter, so you won’t always have to go to the NIS office to get new passports.

So, here in this article, you will get to know how to track the passport even from the comfort of your home. But before then, you must realize that what we are talking about here is the Nigerian international passport and not the ECOWAS passport. They are quite different. For the ECOWAS passport, this only gives you the chance to travel into 15 West African countries and nothing more (since it is actually just an ECOWAS thing).

However, we must realize that the Nigerian international passport can be used to travel anywhere you like in the world. Additionally, the agency responsible for the issuance of the Nigerian passport is the Nigerian Immigration Services, and they, for the main time, give electronic passports for new applications. Nigerians who are not government officials can apply for a standard e-passport, while the other one is meant for diplomats.

How To Track Your Nigerian Passport Application Status

You can actually check this from the comfort of your home, office, or on the go. The only thing you need is a device with data (perhaps a laptop or tablet or smartphone).

The first thing is to visit https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/passport/passportPaymentStatus (that is the direct URL that will take you to the exact place to do it)

When you launch the URL, you will see  “Check Passport Status” to confirm that is the right page to get it done. You will see the below options:

  • Passport Application Id :
  • Passport Reference No :
  • Submit

What you simply have to do is to place your Passport Application Id in the option for it, and your Passport Reference Number in the other block. After that, click submit, and you are good to go.

So, you should see that it is not actually difficult to track your Nigerian passport application status.

Are you planning to apply for a Nigerian passport but you are clueless about how to go about it? We’ve got you covered too. Here are the things you need to take to the office of the immigration office:

  • Your completed passport application form
  • Two recent passport-size photographs
  • Proof of payment
  • State of origin (Valid staff ID card attached) or Letter of ID from local government
  • Your birth certificate
  • A completed Guarantor’s form (with a photocopy of the data page of Guarantor’s Nigerian e-passport and one passport-size photograph of the Guarantor)
  • Your marriage certificate (if you are married)

If you want to get one for your child who is below 18, you need these:

  • A completed passport application form
  • A passport-size photograph (signed on the reverse side by you)
  • Your child’s birth certificate
  • Evidence of Nigerian citizenship of parent/s
  • Letter of consent from both parents
  • Proof of payment

Note that the application can actually be processed either online or offline (don’t worry, you will definitely get your passport using any of the methods).

If you intend to do it online, you can easily get it done from the comfort of your home with a laptop or tablet. The first thing to do is to launch the Nigerian Immigration Services portal and choose the passport-type, before settling for the processing country. After that, simply complete your application form and find a way to upload your scanned copies of the required documents. Then, you can make your payment via Visa cards and as payment becomes successful, tap “Submit”.

After all these have been done properly, you will be issued a Reference number and an Application ID (note that these are the things you will use to track your passport). You can then proceed to print out Guarantor’s form and have it certified before proceeding to the office you settled for to submit the completed application form (don’t forget that you are also to take your picture there as well as your biometrics).

If you are doing it the offline way, the first thing to do is to tender your application via an agent in the country. Don’t forget that this method might take longer than the other one (well, technology is meant to make things easier for us), and you must be careful not to fall into the wrong hands (this is because there are a lot of fraudsters in the country). But then, either you are using an agent or not, you must still appear in the office of the agency to submit your necessary documents and have your biometric details taken.

It should be noted that it takes up to 2 days for a new passport application to be processed. However, don’t keep your mind on this, because at times, it might take more days before you can see to this. If you are currently living outside the country, you can apply for your international passport at the closest consulate (it can also be done via online method).

It is pretty easy to apply for a Nigerian international passport, and despite the challenges in the country, you can still get it sooner than you expected. Yours is simply to make sure that you appropriately follow the processes, then use the medium we suggested above to track the progress of your passport.
