This is a list of current Regional Ministers in Ghana. Regional Ministers are charged with administering the affairs of the various regions in the country. Regions are the first level of sub-national government in Ghana; they are the equivalent of states in other countries, and they are further broken down into metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (or MMDA’s).

Regional Ministers are very powerful people in the country; they rank among some of the most powerful people in the country. With that power comes responsibility; the work of Regional Ministers is very demanding and tasking.

Not only must they plan and prepare for the future; they must also administer the government affairs of their Regions to ensure that everything goes smoothly.

General Information About Current Regional Ministers In Ghana

Dr Hafiz Bin Salih

Region: Upper West Region

Dr Hafiz Bin Salih is the Regional Minister for Upper West Region. He was born in 1970 in Wa, Upper West Region. He is an expert in Social Administration and Education. Some of his other skills include management, conflict resolution, strategic thinking, advocacy, supervision, and communication. Dr Hafiz Bin Salih is also an author.

Stephen Yakubu

Region: Upper East

Stephen Yakubu was born in Upper East Region on 25 May 1966. He obtained a BSc in Planning from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Stephen Yakubu is a politician and was a member of Parliament for Binduri constituency in the Upper East Region of Ghana. Presently he is the Regional Minister for the Upper East Region, and he also serves as the Chairman of Regional Security Council.

Yidana Zakaria

Region: North East

Yidana Zakaria was born on October 10, 1969 at Gbimsi, a community, which is in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region. Mr Yidana obtained a Bachelor of Education in Psychology from the University of Cape Coast.

Yidana Zakaria had a good career as a teacher; he taught in several schools across the country. After a very good career in education, he turned his attention to politics. He is presently the Regional Minister of North East Region.

Saeed Muhazu Jibril

Region: Savannah

Saeed Muhazu Jibril was formerly a member of parliament. He is formerly an Assemblyman for Laribanga Electoral Area, as well as the District Chief Executive (DCE). Presently, Saeed Muhazu Jibril is the Regional Minister for Savannah Region.

He is a very vocal and energetic personality who is driven to provide the dividends of democracy to the people of his region, and the people of the country in general.

Shani Alhassan Saibu

Region: Northern Region

Shani Alhassan Saibu is a Ghanaian politician; he is presently the Regional Minister of Northern Region. He is a visionary; he has proposed several development agendas for his region, including massive investments in agriculture.

Justina Owusu – Banahene

Region: Bono

Justina Owusu Banahene is a Ghanaian politician. She is the Regional Minister for Bono Region, and she is very charismatic. She was recently described as a born leader; full of self confidence. She recently held a showpiece in which she is bringing Indian investors to invest in industries within her region.

Kwasi Adu-Gyan

Region: Bono East

Kwasi Adu-Gyan was formerly an Assemblyman before becoming one of the current Regional Ministers in Ghana. He heads Bono East Region in Ghana, and he is a very energetic public servant who is committed to developing the region in terms of tourism, and agriculture. He recently flagged off a drive towards increase the production of cashew in the region.

Joseph Makubu

Region: Oti

Joseph Makubu was born 12 September 1980. He attended EP Senior High School in Saboba, Northern Region, and then Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Joseph Makubu entered into politics at a young age; he is a member of the New Patriotic Party. As early as 2018, he was serving as regional secretary of the party. He is the Oti Regional Minister.

George Yaw Boakye

Region: Ahafo

George Yaw Boakye was born 6 October 1956, in Sankore, Ghana. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. He is a career educator; he worked as vice principal of St. Joseph’s Training College at Bechem, before he moved into politics.

He is member of the New Patriotic Party. His first major political milestone was becoming the District Chief Executive of Asunafo South District. He is presently the Regional Minister of Ahafo Region.

Simon Osei-Mensah

Region: Ashanti

Simon Osei Mensah was born on 27^th of May 1961. He attended the University of National and World Economy, and he had a good career as a banker and economist. Simon Osei Mensah worked at Kuapa Kokoo Credit Union for a long time before turning his attention to politics.

He was a member of Parliament during the 6^th Assembly. He then became the Regional Minister for Ashanti Region. He is a member of the New Patriotic Party, and he was appointed by President Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo in 2017, he was then approved by the members of Parliament in February 2017.

Richard Obeng

Region: Western North

Richard Obeng was born April 2, 1981 in Secondi, in Ghana. He attended the University of Ghana, and later the University of Witwatersrand, in South Africa. He worked as a Financial Analyst, and then he became interested in civil activities, which led him to work as a Civil Society Activist before entering politics. He is also an Entrepreneur.

Richard Obeng is a rather distinguished individual; he worked for over ten years as a derivative specialist and a capital market analyst for the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, as well as the New York Stock Exchange.

He later became the CEO for the National Youth Authority. He founded the Center for National Affairs, and then he founded the Center of National Affairs. He is not just a politician, he is a grassroots person, and as a Regional Minister, he supports many Ghanaian youth initiatives.

Seth Kwame Acheampong

Region: Eastern Koforidua

Seth Kwame Acheampong was born 18 December 1971. He attended the Graduate School of Management, France, Paris and obtained his postgraduate diploma in Management in 2008. He joined politics, and became a member of the New Patriotic Party. He was elected as member of the 5th, 6th and 7th parliaments.

He is the Regional Minister for Eastern Koforidua.

Archibald Letsa

Region: Volta

Hon. Dr. Archibald Letsa is a distinguished professional. He trained as a medical doctor at the University of Ghana Medical School. He then worked at various health establishments, especially in the Volta and Eastern Regions before establishing his own medical practice from 1995 to 2014.

Archibald Letsa is an established Ghanaian politician; he is a member of the New Patriotic Party in Ghana. He was a member of Parliament before he went on to become the Regional Minister for the Volta Region in 2017.

Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah

Region: Western Secondi

Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah was born 18 June 1974, in Takoradi, Ghana. He attended Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, and also Sangonet, South Africa, and Empretec Ghana. He worked as an hotelier for a few years, before joining e-Base Africa as an executive. From there he went to the Secondi Metropolitan Assembly, where he worked as the finance committee chairman.

He then became a Member of Parliament for the Takoradi constituency in the Western Region of Ghana. He was the deputy minister for Aviation in Ghana, and now he is the incumbent Regional Minister of Western Secondi.

Justina Marigold Assan

Region: Central

Justina Marigold Assan is a notable politician; she is the current Regional Minister of Central Region in Ghana, and she is known for being very hardworking and dedicated, which has led to her rise within the New Patriotic Party, and the politics of Ghana in general.

Before becoming the Regional Minister of Central Region, she was a Polling Station Women’s Organizer, and the later Deputy Constituency Organizer for the party in the Agona West Constituency, and then she rose to become a Deputy Regional Women’s Organizer in the Central Region.

Justina Marigold Assan then received appointment as a Government Appointee at the Agona West Municipal Assembly in 2017 before her elevation to the position of the Municipal Chief Executive.

Henry Quartey

Region: Greater Accra

Henry Quartey was born 12 March 1971. He has distinguished himself as a capable and forward thinking individual, both as a private businessman, and a politician. He is presently the Regional Minister of Greater Accra, and before that he was the Member of Parliament representing the Ayawaso Central Constituency.

Before that he was a private businessman. He was the Sales and Marketing Manager of B.B.C Trading from 1992 to 1996, and then he became the Regional Director of Dalebrook Company Limited from 1997 to 1998. He also maintained a position as the Sales Manager and Director of Pecoll Aluminiuim Systems from 1995 to 2000. He was the CEO of Krafty Hospitality Services from 2003 to date.

He previously served as the Deputy Minister for Interior.

How Do Regional Ministers Get Into Office In Ghana?

According to Section 145, paragraph 1 of the Ghanaian Constitution, commonly called the Regional Ministers Act; There shall be a Regional Minister in every Region of Ghana who shall be appointed by the President with the prior approval of Parliament. Said Minister shall be responsible for administration of the Region.

Therefore, Regional Ministers are appointed by the President. However, the law states that such an appointment must be approved by Parliament. However, interpretation of the law is quite broad and varied; some Regional Ministers have been appointed first, and then approved by parliament months later.
