Borno state was created in the year 1976 following up the split up of the North-eastern states. Until the year 1991, the state contained what is now known as Yobe state. This state took charge mostly by the aid of the Kanuri tribe even though there are still some other smaller or lesser tribes which are found in the southern part of Borno state.

In the year 1902, Borno state was officially incorporated into the Northern Nigeria protectorate by the British and created a new state capital at Maiduguri in the year 1907, of which it remained the state capital till this day.

  • Jere Tribe

In Borno state, Jere is a local government area, while generally, Jere is a tribe in Borno state. Meanwhile, the origination of the Jere people still remains unknown to date, but it is believed that the Jere people have been in the Jere local government in Borno state for hundreds of years now. The Major occupation of the Jere people are farming and trading, however, speaking of religion, Islam remains a dominant religion of the Jere tribe till date.

  • Fulani Tribe

Speaking of origination, the Fulani people are not known to originate certainly from one particular state, but one thing for sure is that they originated somewhere from the Middle East. However, the Fulani people are known to be violent people following their violent history, they were the tribe that led the Islamic Jihad movement in some parts of Africa and Nigeria particularly. Looking at a Fulani man, what crosses your mind? Well, they are believed to be nomads, a cattle rearer and a Muslim. Their men are known to put on the dress tagged as Baban Riga while the women follow their normal northern dressing culture of wearing blouses and tying wrappers alongside wearing hijabs.

  • Chibok Tribe

I believe everyone in Nigeria has heard of Chibok, even if you didn’t know of Chibok before, you would have heard of them recently following serial reports of Chibok under the attack of notorious terrorists “Boko Haram”, Chibok is a tribe as well as a local government in Borno state, Nigeria. the tribe is known to have a total headcount of 66, 105 people, however, this tribe became known and popularly after the attack of the Boko Haram terrorists. However, the Chibok tribe is mainly dominated by Christians and few Muslim which may be the cause for the attack on them. They are noted to speak the Kibatu language. The Chibok Men does not take the back seat when it comes to wearing a flowing gown termed as Baba Riga and the women tie wrappers, wear blouses, and cover their heads with hijabs. Their food is prepared from millet and maize, and they have farming as their main occupation.

  • Hausa tribe

Where are you expecting to see this tribe? Of course, you were, as most of the people think they are the only ones residing in the North alongside the Fulanis, although, the Hausa tribe is known as the most influential tribe in the North, this is due to the fact that most of the key leaders in Nigeria are Hausas. More also, the Hausa tribe are known to gain dominance than any other tribe in the military sector. As we all know, Islam is a dominating religion for the Hausa tribe as farming and trading also is their major occupation. Following up history, the Hausas were the first tribe to welcome Islam and there has been no history of the Hausas leading any form of jihad moves. As usual, the Hausa men put on Baban Riga gown and their women wrappers and blouses with hijab head covers. However, the Hausas get their meals from millet, sorghum, and maize hereby making Tuwo out of them.

  • Higi Tribe

The people of this tribe are known to occupy the Gwoza local government area of Borno state. This tribe is termed as a minority tribe in Borno State and they are noted to speak a language called the Kamwe language. In dressing, they dress just the same way the Hausa tribe dress and also made farming their major occupation.

  • Babur tribe

The Babur tribe migrated from Yemen and now occupies the following local governments in Borno State; Hawul, Kwaya, Biu, Shani, Kusar, and Bayo. The people of this tribe are all known to be Muslims. The Babur tribe share a lot in common with the Hausa tribe and as the case may be, they dress in the same way and eat the same meals. They are noted to speak a language called Babur language, and they all are farmers.

  • Kanakuru Tribe

These people are found in Biu Local government in Borno state with the population of about 60, 000 people of which majority of them are Christians, if calculated with percentage, the Christians take up to 71%.
