The University of Benin is one of the prominent tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It is a federal school that was established as far back as in the year 1970 and has produced tons of great and successful graduates doing just fine in their various fields. We can make reference to people like Babatunde Fashola (former governor of Lagos State), Emmanuel Uduaghan (a former governor of Delta State), Richard Mofe Damijo (a popular Nollywood actor), and so on. 

The University has two campuses in Benin city, and currently has over 40,000 students with over 9,000 teaching and non-teaching staff.

University of Benin Admission Requirements

There is a system that has been put in place to embrace new students into the institution, and aspirants must ensure they dedicatedly adhere to these things before they can have access. So, it is not solely all about being very intelligent and knowing everything in the world – if you as an aspirant failed to satisfy these requirements, then you won’t be shown the door in. 

Here are the general requirements for admission to the University of Benin:

  •  Aspirants are meant to possess at least, 5credits (English language inclusive) in WASC, WAEC SSCE/GCE, NECO, SSCE, or NABTEB. It should be noted that this result should be in not more than two sittings.
  • First-degree holders trying to get admission into postgraduate programmes must have a second class honours (lower division) and also satisfy the above for the respective programmes.
  • Aspirants seeking admission into the University of Benin must also meet the stipulated cutoff for their departments (In the current year) before they will be given admission.
  • UTME candidates are required to score nothing less than 180 in the JAMB examination before they can be invited to proceed to the next stage (which is the Post Utme screening exercise). All UTME candidates that meet up to the cut off mark are to participate in the post UTME screening examination. It is expedient for a candidate to perform well in the exercise – to increase their chances of getting admitted. 
  • For Diploma holders (of UNIBEN) seeking admission into Degree programmes, they must have at least a Merit Level Pass. However, those from other recognized institutions should have at least at the Upper Credit Level Pass.
  • UTME candidates are meant to make the University of Benin (UNIBEN) their first choice of institution when registering for Jamb. 
  • JUPEB Certificate of relevant points approved by the University of Benin Senate can be used as a Direct Entry requirement, and successful aspirants can start from 200 level.
