The worst neighborhoods in Corpus Christi are not given that designation on account of the architecture, or the lack of social amenities. These neighborhoods are downright dangerous, and it is mainly because of the high rate of crime, and the generally aggressive nature of many of the residents that they should be avoided by decent people.
Of course, a high crime rate often means that businesses will be forced to find safer locations to operate in, which will in turn result in the loss of job opportunities. This lack of economic prospects will in turn result in the further development of a criminal culture in these areas; meaning that things will get a lot worse.
When visiting Corpus Christi one may or may not really need a bullet proof vest; but it is certainly a good idea to stay sharp, and to know what places are best avoided at certain times.
Worst Neighborhoods In Corpus Christi 2023
1. Central City
Central City, as the name implies, is located somewhat in the center of the city of Corpus Christi. The population is put at around 97,729, which makes it one of the most populated parts of the city. However, this population has not been harnessed to any significant effect because this is one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Corpus Christi.
Violent Crimes are reported at 1,614 crimes per 100,000 people. This unreasonably high crime rate is traced down to the fact that there is a very high number of young people in the area, and many of them are into gangs and drugs.
2. Northwest
The northwest area of Corpus Christi has a population of 15,307. It directly meets the central city area; and as a result it has most of the same problems faced by this area; including the high rate of crime.
Violent crime is recorded here at the rate of 663 crimes per 100,000 people. These figures are relatively high; it gives the impression that if there were as many as 100,000 people there the city would record exponentially more violent criminal activity.
3. Flour Bluff
Flour Bluff is a mostly coastal part of the city; it is bordered by Corpus Christi Bay on the north, Oso Bay on the west, and the Laguna Madre on the east.
This was an important maritime port in the old days; it got the name Flour Bluff during the pastry war when Mexican soldiers robbed French businesses in the area, and the French government sent a fleet of ships to seal off the bay area so as to prevent the Mexicans doing any trade.
The blockade was unsuccessful because Mexican soldiers showed up unannounced and dropped about 100 barrels of flour on the French garrison; thus bringing about the name Flour Bluff.
Today this is a thriving city with 17,800 residents; and there is a Walmart, and H-E-B grocery stores in the city. However, for such a small population, the crime rate of 587 violent crimes per 100,000 people is unacceptably high.
4. South Side
South Side is located in the southern side of Corpus Christi, and directly meets the Central City. The South Side of Corpus Christi was actually developed with some ambition; this beautiful area is mostly residential, and has vast areas transformed into paradisiacal landscapes such as the South Texas Botanical Gardens, which has orchids and nature trails through the forest and wetlands.
Another spectacle of nature is the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve where children and adults can see animals running around in their natural environment.
However, these natural beauties had best be viewed with caution; South Side records Violent Crimes at 578 crimes per 100,000 people. Some of these crimes include; shootings, robberies, car jacking and so on. Visiting South Side Corpus Christi is best done with caution; it is a good idea to avoid isolated areas.
5. Bay Area
Bay Area is located on the Southern Side of Corpus Christi; adjoining both the Central City and the South Side. As the name implies it is a maritime beauty; serving both industrial and recreational purposes. Bayside has a population of around 41,486, and there are even more housing developments on the way.
However, with the issue of crime still unresolved, it seems very unlikely that these developments will fulfill their potentials. Violent Crimes are recorded at 540 crimes per 100,000 people.
6. Calallen
Calallen used to be an independent city, but was annexed into Corpus Christi a long time ago. It is a coastal town, the Nueces River is on the north. Calallen is known as one of the worst neighborhoods in Corpus Christi, despite its natural beauty because of the high rate of criminal activity.
The neighborhood has a population of 14,389, but Violent Crimes are recorded at 394 crimes per 100,000 people.
7. Mustang-Padre Island
The Mustang-Padre Island neighborhood is in the southern tip of Corpus Christi, although cut off from the mainland by the water. This is a historically and culturally rich place; and one that could become very significant to the economy.
The population is around 4,301, and Violent Crimes are recorded at 337 crimes per 100,000 people; which is relatively high for such a small town.
8. Clarkwood
Clarkwood is an area on the west side of Corpus Christi, Texas. This used to be an independent town before being annexed by Corpus Christi in 1962. There is not much to report here; the major attractions include the Tuloso-Midway Independent School District, and the Tuloso-Midway High School.
This is a rather rough part of town; in 2012 a man was shot in cold blood seven times in one of the most gruesome murders ever seen in Corpus Christi.
9. South Port Avenue
South Port Avenue is so bad that policemen prefer to wear bullet proof vests when patrolling the area; and they also like to work in pairs. This is an absolute ghetto; a place where few decent people dare to walk.
In April 2022 there was a fatal shooting of a man in cold blood, although the suspect was later arrested.
10. NAS Drive
NAS Drive is a commercially developed neighborhood in Corpus Christi. The area has some self storage units, town houses, and shopping centers. This is a self sufficient neighborhood, although crazy things do happen here.
There was a multiple murder incidence in a mobile home park there in 2014. A young boy of about 10 years old was also shot in that incidence; although he survived, thankfully.

The worst neighborhoods in Corpus Christi are hardly any worse than similar neighborhoods in Charlotte or Brooklyn when the statistics are considered. However, the small population figures in some of those areas give the impression that crime is relatively worse in this city.
