The history of Radio Broadcasting in Nigeria dates back to the founding of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria in 1933 by the British Colonial Government. It was then named the Radio Diffusion Service (RDS), and it was just a relay of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s foreign radio service and their broadcasts which was produced through loudspeakers in certain public places.

The Radio Diffusion Service then metamorphosed into the Nigerian Broadcasting Service in 1950 and proceeded to commission radio stations in Lagos, Kaduna, Enugu, and Ibadan, as well as Kano. Those radio stations were to serve as regional stations, serving a wider area, as populated by ethnic groups who could at least understand a common language.

The Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) as it is known today, has radio stations in almost every state of the Federation. It remains a government-funded media conglomerate that serves the government’s interest in the area of information dissemination, NEWS sharing, and production of media content which aims to unify the country and promote peaceful coexistence of the numerous tribes and ethnic groups.

Most of the FRCN broadcasts are done in the Amplitude Modulation (AM), Short Wave (SW), and Medium Wave (MW) bands, although the FRCN also does some broadcasting in the Frequency Modulation (FM) band.

The Frequency Modulation (FM ) band in Nigeria is dominated by private broadcasting companies. Ray Power 100.5 is the first private radio station in Nigeria. It was founded in 1994. Though it has corporate offices in the Federal Capital Abuja, its main broadcast facilities are located at 1 AIT Road, Alagbado, Ifako Ijaiye, Lagos State.
