A full list of landlocked countries in Europe and interesting facts about them. Landlocked countries are countries that are sovereign and are known not to have territory that is connected to an ocean or whose coastlines lie on a drainage basin that is known to normally retain water and allows no outflow.

Andorra

Andorra is one of the landlocked countries found in Europe. The country is known to have been created by Charlemagne who was the king of the Franks from 768, King of the Lombards from 774, and the Emperor of the Romans from 800. 

Armenia

Located in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia, Armenia is another landlocked country in Europe. The country is known for having an ancient cultural heritage and also as a unitary, multi-party, democratic nation-state.

Austria

Officially known as the Republic of Austria, Austria is a landlocked country located in the Southern part of Central Europe. The country is known for having nine federated states including Vienna which is the largest city in the country.

Belarus

Belarus is another landlocked country in Europe, the country was formerly known as Byelorussia or Belorussia which is the Russian name. The country is bordered by Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and Lithuania to the Northeast, South, West, and Northwest respectively.

Kosovo

Officially known as the Republic of Kosovo, Kosovo is a partially recognized state that can be located in the Southeastern part of Europe. The country is known to be in a territorial entanglement with the Republic of Serbia that usually results in a fight. 

Czech Republic

Another landlocked country found in Europe is the Czech Republic. The country is also known as Czechia and is located in the Central Part of Europe. The country is bordered by Germany to the West, Austria to the South, Slovakia to the Southeast, and Poland to the northeast. 

Hungary

Being a landlocked country in Europe, Hungary is also located in the Central Part of Europe. The country borders Ukraine to the Northeast, Croatia to the Southwest, and Austria to the West. The country is a medium-sized member state of the European Union. The official language of the country is Hungarian and this language is also widely spoken in the World. 

Liechtenstein

Another landlocked country found in Europe is Liechtenstein. The country is located between Austria and Switzerland. The capital of the country is Vaduz which is a cultural and financial center. The country is officially known as the Principality of Liechtenstein. The official language of the country is German. 

Luxembourg

Surrounded by Germany, France, and Belgium, Luxembourg is another small landlocked country located in Europe. The country is officially known as the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is bordered by Belgium, Germany, and France. The country is known to have a mixture of both French and German cultures.

Macedonia

Popularly known as North Macedonia, Macedonia is also a landlocked country in Europe. The country is located in the Balkan Peninsula in the Southern part of Europe. The country gained its independence in 1991 as one of the successor states of Yugoslavia. 

Moldova

Another landlocked country found in the Eastern part of Europe is Moldova. The country is bordered by Romania and Ukraine. The capital city of the country is known as Chisinau. The official language is Romanian. Moldova is the poorest country in Europe taking into consideration the Gross Domestic Product Per Capita and due to her low score in the Human Development Index in Europe.

San Marino

Here is another microstate found in the Southern part of Europe. The country is officially known as the Republic of San Marino. The country is completely surrounded by Italy. The country is located on the northeastern side of the Apennine Mountains. The capital of the country is the City of San Marino.

Serbia

Officially known as the Republic of Serbia, Serbia is another landlocked country located in Europe. The country is located at the crossroads of both the central and southeastern parts of Europe. The country borders Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia. Currently, the population of the country is approximately about seven million. 

Slovakia

The Slovak Republic is another landlocked country located in the Central Part of Europe. The country is bordered by Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, and Austria. The country is currently made up of over 5.4 million people and the capital city of the country is Bratislava. The official language of the country is Slovak.

Switzerland

Switzerland is a mountainous landlocked country that is located in the Central Part of Europe. Switzerland is well known for its ski resorts and hiking trails. The major industries in the country are the Banking and Finance industries. The country is officially known as the Swiss Federation. 

Vatican City

Another landlocked country found in Europe is Vatican City. The country is surrounded by Rome and houses the Pope and a trove of iconic art and architecture. The country is the smallest sovereign state globally in terms of both area and population.

Generally, a landlocked country is known to have some political and economic handicaps that having access to international waters would avoid. However, the effect can be alleviated depending on the degree of development.
