Football has been a game that has been played over the years for a long time now, games are being played in the field with about 11 players from each team. Each team on that field is being managed by a coach or manager, they are in charge of the team by putting them through on what to do and what not to do. Managers or coaches are in charge or in place if a team wins or loses, they take the glory and at the same time take the blames.

There are lots of coaches today in the football team, but our major focus will be on the Premier Soccer League which is abbreviated as the PSL.   •  Pitso Jingles Mosimane (R700,000 – R800,000)

Pitso Mosimane was a former football player and a current football coach at the Mamelodi Sundowns. Pitso Mosimane is one of the most respected managers in football in South Africa, born and brought up in Kagiso, South Africa, he played football in his youth and played the role of a midfielder, currently, he is 54 years of age and he is said to have served as one of the longest coaches in South Africa.

Mosimane has served as the caretaker coach of South Africa for seven games during 2007 before the appointment of Carlos Alberto Parreira as head coach which made him serve as an assistant coach of South Africa and Joel Santana with South Africa.

On 15 July 2010, Mosimane was named as the new head coach of South Africa, after being an assistant coach he was handed a four-year contract, he won his first game when South Africa played Ghana in the World Cup quarter-final with a 1-0 win, in the year 2012, South Africa failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations after they played a draw in the qualifier when they needed a victory to cross over to the next stage.

Mosimane won the 2016 CAF Champions League with Mamelodi Sundowns after defeating Egypt’s Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate,  that same year, he won the 10th best coach in the world for 2016, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics and in 2017, he won the Coach of the Year accolade at the 2016 Glo-CAF awards in Abuja, Nigeria.

This is the highest second paid coach in the PSL. Stuart Baxter who is born in England and was raised by Scottish parents is a former player and head coach of the South African National football team, he has played for a number of clubs in England, Scotland, Australia, Sweden, and in the United States, in terms of international football, Baxter has managed South Africa twice as well as Finland and the England under-19 team and has previously managed clubs in Sweden, Norway, Portugal, Japan, and South Africa and he is the current South Africa head coach.

  •  Eric Tinkler (R350,000 – R400,000)

Eric Tinkler was born in the year 1970 and he is 48 years of age, born in South Africa.  He has played for a number of clubs and coached other clubs too. He has played for Wits University, Vitória, Cagliari, Barnsley, Caldas, and Bidvest Wits, he moved from Italian club Cagliari to English club Barnsley on 1st July 1997 for a transfer fee of £650,000, he has earned 45 caps for the South African national team between 1994 and 2001 scoring one goal and he was part of the South African team that led South Africa team to victory by winning the 1996 African Cup of Nations, playing in the final, he used to be a former head coach of SuperSport United.

Born in the year 1967, and 51 years of age is one of the South African players and coaches. Komphela played in the South African National Team and has coached a number of clubs in South Africa, he played the role of a defender during his time. He was the manager of the team known as Maritzburg United and acted as the coach of Kaizer Chiefs for a while, he is now currently coaching the Bloemfontein Celtics.

  • Gavin Hunt (R300,000 – R400,000)

Gavin Hunt was born in Cape Town, South Africa in the year 1964, he is taking the number five spot on this list as one of the highest-paid coaches in the PSL. Gavin Hunt played as a right-back during his youthful age and he went into coaching after an Achilles tendon injury, he played with the Hellenic and he was known as one of the best players.

His greatest success came at SuperSport United, where he won three consecutive PSL championships from 2007-08 to 2009-10, he has previously managed Seven Stars, Hellenic FC, Black Leopards, and Moroka Swallows and he is currently managing the Premier Soccer League club Bidvest Wits.

  •  Muhsin Ertugral (R250,000 to R350,000)

Born in the year 1959, he was a Turkish football coach, he has played for several teams like for Antalyaspor before leaving his homeland and continuing his career at clubs in Belgium and Germany where he also honed his coaching craft. He is the current coach of Maritzburg United.

  •  Roger De Sa (R250,000)

He was born in the year 1964 in Mozambique, Roger De SA played the position of a goalkeeper and he was among the few Africans who have been able to play for their country in three different sporting categories. In De Sa’s case, basketball, soccer, and indoor soccer as well. He is the current head coach of Premier Soccer League club Platinum Stars.

  •  Kjell Jonevret (R250,000)

Born in the year 1962, Kjell is a Swedish football coach and a former football player, born in Stockholm Sweden, and played the position of a striker. He managed Djurgårdens IF between 2004 and 2006, he led his team to the double, winning both the Allsvenskan and the Swedish cup in 2005, was appointed the manager of South African team Orlando Pirates in February 2017 and resigned in August 2017.

Dan Malesela was born in the year 1965 and he is 53 years of age, he is known to be one of the highest-paid coaches in the Premier Soccer League, born in South Africa, he is the current coach of Chippa United.

  •  Peter Butler (R220,000)

Peter Butler was born in the year 1966 in England, an English professional football player and coach. As a player, he has made more than 450 appearances in the Football League and the Premier League, he was in charge of the Botswana national team from 2014 until 2017.

Butler played as a midfielder for Huddersfield, West Brom, and some other teams. In 2017, he was appointed as the new head coach of Platinum Stars in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League and left the position that same year.

Premier Soccer League or PSL is a football league game which is played in South Africa. Just like the EPL which is the European Premier League which is held in England, South Africa has also established theirs and they are the national sports association responsible for administering the two professional football divisions in South Africa, the South African Premier Division and National First Division.

The PSL was formed with an agreement between the National Soccer League and the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), the PSL acts as a governing body and the organizer of the competition, it is affiliated to the South African Football Association (SAFA) but SAFA does not govern the PSL competition, the National First Division (NFD) is the second-highest league of South African club soccer, teams that are relegated from the PSL organized divisions compete in the SAFA Second Division.

NSL is the only special member of the South African football association (SAFA), it consists of 32 members which comp of the 16 clubs from the Premier Division and 16 clubs from the first division who together form the Board of governors. The board of governors which are created are Supreme bodies which are in charge of enforcing certain rules and regulations for everyone to follow, Article 13 of the NSL constitution states the functions of the board of governors, their do’s and don’t, rules and regulations that will guide everyone.

Boards of governors are mandated to elect a chairman and even the executive committee, management, and operational functions are given to the executive committee, the committee consists of the chief executive officer and 8 elected members, executive are elected for a period of four years and delegates some of its operational functions to the CEO.

Before holding several competitions, they sell their naming rights to a title sponsor, the PSL is known to organize the following competitions which are; MTN 8, Telkom Knockout Cup, National First Division/ NFD Cup, Nedbank Cup, South African Premier Division/ PSL, previously organized cups by the PSL were the Charity Cup which was a one-day four-team event which took place from the year 1986- 2010, there was also the Baymed cup which was open to the first division sides but the competition was terminated after one edition in 2006. Before joining the league, you must get the license to participate which can be bought in the free market, in the year 2002, the PSL bought two Premier Division licenses, from the owners of Ria Stars F.C. and Free State Stars F.C.
