Eco bank is a Pan African banking conglomerate, the official name is the Eco bank translational inc. The bank is the leading independent regional banking group in West Africa and Central Africa with banking operations in 36 African countries. The bank was well established to suit the interest of customers and make sure that they are well satisfied with their services.
Eco bank which was the ETI is a public limited liability company which was established as a bank holding company in 1985. In the early 1980s, the banking industry in West Africa was dominated by foreign and state-owned banks, there were no commercial banks in West Africa which then the ETI was founded and their aim was to fill up that vacuum, which was the space that there were no other banks in West Africa. The bank was established to help the needs of West Arica and this took a positive turn out.
Later on, the federation of west African chambers of commerce promoted and initiated a project for the creation of a private regional banking institution in West Africa. In the year 1984, the Eco promotion S.A was incorporated, the founding shareholders raised the seed capital and the promotional activities, all these which led to the ETI.
In the year 1985, ETI was incorporated with an authorized capital of USD100 million, the initial paid-up capital was raised from over 1,500 individuals and institutions from West African countries, the money raised which was for the capital was USD $30 million. The ETI has two specialized subsidiaries which are the Ecobank development corporation (EDC) and E-process International.
The EDC operates brokerage houses on all 3 stocks exchange in West Africa. The aim of the EDC was to help develop Ecobank investment banking and advisory businesses throughout the countries, where Ecobank operates while the aim of the Eprocess is to manage the group’s information technology function with a view to ultimately centralising the group’s middle and back office operations to reduce costs, improve service standard and efficiency.
