History Of The University
The present location of the main campus of the Delta State University, Abraka has a long history of being a Centre of Education. It started out as a Government Teachers’ Training College during the colonial era and retained that same status for a few years into the post-colonial era. It was upgraded to the status of a College of Education that awards Nigerian Certificate of Education (N.C.E.) and it did this from 1971-1985.
In the year 1981, the College of Education became affiliated to the University of Benin, Benin City as a result of which it began to offer degree programs from the year 1981 till 1985 when it became the Education Faculty of the then Bendel State University which had its main campus at Ekpoma. When Edo and Delta States were created in the month of August 1991, the main campus of the then Bendel State University, Ekpoma became the site of the Edo State University in the month of December 1991.
This necessitated the setting up of a state-owned University also in Delta state. It was only logical that the existing facility in Abraka is upgraded to the status of a University and this was done on the 30th of April 1992 by the Executive Governor of Delta State at that time, Olorogun Felix Ibru. We look at the existing school fee structure as well as the hostel fees paid by students of the University as of now.
