West African Examinations Council abbreviated as WAEC is an international examination body that conducts the West African Senior School Certificate Examination required for gaining admission into higher institutions of learning such as the University for citizens of West African countries. The body was set up in the year 1952 and has since then contributed to the development of education in Anglophonic countries in the West African region. Countries that the body conducts examination for are Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the Gambia. The council is the leading body and also the most recognized internationally for conducting of examinations for students from English speaking areas of West Africa seeking admission to Universities and Polytechnics both locally and in foreign lands. Since inception, the council has issued quite a number of certificates and conducted a lot of examinations over the years. The council has also formed an endowment fund targeted at improving education across West African states through lectures and aid to those who cannot afford education.

The Council is known for its strong committees. The council is structurally divided into three major parts: International committees, National Committees, and Subcommittees. The International Committee attends to matters that affect all member states and also harmonizes national views concerning policies of the council as a whole. The National committees are saddled with the responsibility of dealing with matters relating to specific member countries. The National committees also assist in the articulation of national views on issues affecting the policy of the entire council. The subcommittees of the council work on various other aspects of the Council’s activities.
Examinations Conducted By WAEC
Four different categories of examinations are conducted by the body. They are International Examinations, National Examinations, Examinations conducted by the body in collaboration with other examining bodies, and lastly, Examinations conducted on behalf of other examining bodies. The International exams of the council are taken in the five countries with the WAEC ordinance. The international exams consist of:
- WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination)
- WASSCE FOR PRIVATE CANDIDATES (FIRST SERIES) conducted between JANUARY–FEBRUARY
- WASSCE FOR (SCHOOL CANDIDATES) conducted between MARCH-MAY
- WASSCE FOR PRIVATE CANDIDATES (MAIN GCE) conducted between SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER
The National Examinations Taken In Individual Countries Include:
- The Junior Secondary School Certificate for Nigeria and the Gambia,
- Junior and Senior High School Certificate Examinations for Liberia,
- National Primary School and Basic Education Certificate Examinations for Sierra Leone,
- Basic Education Certificate Examinations for Ghana, and
- Senior School Certificate Examinations for Ghana.
WAEC also coordinates examinations in conjunction with some trustworthy examination bodies such as:
- City and Guilds of London Institute
- Royal Society of Arts
The council in West Africa also conducts examination on behalf of international examination bodies such as:
- University of London GCE
- Scholastic Aptitude Test and Graduate Record Examinations for Educational Testing Service, Princeton, USA, and
- JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board) examination in countries outside Nigeria.
Certificates issued by the council to candidates that participate in its examinations are credible and reliable. The standard of the council’s certificates is streamlined to match that of the United Kingdom. This is so because the WAEC Ordinance empowers the council to conduct Examinations and award certificates provided the certificates do not have a lower standard compared to the equivalent certificates of examining authorities in the United Kingdom.
Origin And History Of WAEC
In the year 1948, The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, University of London School Examinations Matriculation Council and West African Departments of Education met concerning issues of education in West Africa. The meeting was held to discuss the future policy of education in West Africa. The meeting was called to discuss the future policy of education in West Africa. Dr. George Barker Jeffery then Director of the University Of London Institute Of Education was appointed to visit some West African countries to access the general education level and requirements in West Africa. After his three-month visitation to Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, and Sierra Leone, which lasted from December of 1949 to March 1950 came to an end, he submitted his report strongly supporting the need for the establishment of a West African Examination Council. He further highlighted and made recommendations on the composition and duties of the Council. Based on this report commonly referred to as Jeffery’s report, the groups met with governments of the countries involved and an agreement was reached on establishing a West African Examination Council fully adopting Jeffery’s recommendations.
After this, the legislative assemblies of Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia passed an ordinance, the West African Examinations Council Ordinance NO. 40 approving the West African Examination Council in the month of December 1951. In the Ordinance, an agreement was made on the coordination of exams, and issuing of certificates to students in individual countries by the West African Examination Council. Liberia much later in 1974 issued its own ordinance at the annual meeting held in Lagos, Nigeria. Following the success of setting up an examination council, the first meeting of the council was called and it held in Accra, Ghana in the month of March 1953. In that meeting, five committees were formed to assist the council. The committees are the Administrative and Finance Committee, School Examinations Committee, Public Service Examinations Committee, The Professional, Technical and Commercial Examinations Committee, and the Local Committee. In the month of March year 2002, the Council celebrated its 50th anniversary in Abuja, Nigeria. It was a celebration of 50 years of excellence of the examination body.

Am ADIATU OLUWASHEYE Olawuyi, sat for may/June examination year 2000,at Orile Iporo Community high school odeda Abeokuta,with the Center number 4281609and seat number 019 respectively.
I was at the school on Tuesday 25th June 2019.To collect my Original Waec certificate, to my surprise I was told my certificate cannot be found nor seen among other certificate?.
Pls am write to knw what step need to be taking Asap.because I need it very urgently for Job Confirmation here in Lagos.
