History Of The University

Delta State University has a long history of being a Centre of academic excellence. It began as a Government Teachers’ Training College during the colonial era, a status it maintained for some years into the post-colonial era. It was then upgraded to a College of Education that awarded the Nigerian Certificate of Education (N.C.E.) from the year 1971 up to 1985.

In the year 1981, it became affiliated to the University of Benin located in Benin City as a result of which it began to offer degree programs from the year 1981 up to 1985 when it became the Education Faculty of the then Bendel State University with the main campus located at Ekpoma.

When Edo and Delta States were created in the month of August 1991, this resulted in the conversion of the main campus of the then Bendel State University, Ekpoma to Edo State University in December of the year 1991.

This then meant that an autonomous Delta State University has to be established. It was therefore only logical that the existing facility located in Abraka be upgraded to University status. The facility was upgraded on the 30th day of April 1992 by the then Executive Governor of Delta State, Olorogun Felix Ibru. The University began with 5 faculties which are;

  • Faculty of Agriculture
  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Arts
  • Faculty of Science and
  • Faculty of the Social Sciences.

In the year 1995, the Delta State Government came up with a new policy of having three campuses spread within the three senatorial districts of the State. With this policy in mind, two more campuses were established to join the main campus in Abraka. They are the Anwai-Asaba and Oleh campuses. Currently, the academic programs of the Delta State University are distributed as follows amongst the three campuses:
