Top 10 Best Rappers in Nigeria 2020

1. Olamide Badoo

His name is Olamide Adedeji but he goes by the stage name “Olamide Badoo”. Olamide is a native Hip-hop artist from Bariga, Lagos state. He loves to rap in his native Yoruba language and this has endeared him to many of the speakers of the language. He is one of the hottest rap artists in Nigeria today, in 2011, he released his debut studio album Rapsodi while signed to coded tunes. On July 17, 2013, he became the first Nigerian Artist to sign an endorsement deal with Ciroc. His third studio album which he releases in  November 2013 was one of his biggest hits, the album was titled “Baddest Guy Ever Liveth”. Olamide Badoo’s awards and nominations include Album of the year by Nigeria Entertainment Awards and City People Entertainment Award as Rap Artist of the Year 2016, Best Street Hip-hop Artist, Artist of the Year and Best Pop Single at the Headies in 2015, Best Rap Album, Album of the Year and Artist of the year at The Headies in 2014 and World Music Awards as the World’s Best Male Artist, World Best Entertainer of the Year and World’s Best Live Act.

2. MI

The first on the list of top 10 best rappers in Nigeria is Jude Abaga known by fans of his music as MI, he has wowed every lover of good music with his unique style and creativity. He is one of Nigeria’s most respected legend of hip-hop and rap, M.I Abaga’s lyricism is unrivaled and unparalleled in the whole of Africa, after Modenine. This guy works hard on his rap and lyrics and the result is a fresh, emotion, credible, and emotional song his fans love. His album “The Chairman” won Best Rap Album in The Headies in 2015 and he was nominated for Best Rap Single. He has won over 17 awards and gotten over 20 nominations so far.

3. Mode 9

His name is Babatunde Segun Adewale popularly known as Mode9, he is also known as Samurai IX, Polimaf, and Nigel Benn, he is the second on our list of top 10 best rappers in Nigeria today. This talented English-born Nigerian rapper won The Headies Lyrist on The Roll seven times .in 2006, Modenine won 3 Headies Hip-hop awards and 3 Channel O Music Video Awards. His album E’Pluribus Unum which he released in 2007 was celebrated as the Best Hip-hop album to come out of Africa, it was airplay on New Yorks Hot 97. He is known for his slick wordplay and he currently has over 7 studio albums and 5 mixtapes to his credit. He is not only the best rap artist in Nigeria; he has been celebrated several times as the best rap artist Africa has ever produced.

 

4. Phyno

His real name is Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike but many know him by his stage name Phyno. Phyno is a rapper, singer, record producer, and songwriter in Nigeria who loves rapping in Igbo his native language. The success of his music career started with the recording of his debut studio album “No Guts No Glory”, the album featured artists like Olamide, Omawunmi, P-Square, Flavour N’abania, Timaya, Runtown, and Ice Prince. His song “Ghost Mode” which featured Olamide Badoo won Best Collabo at the 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Award and The Headies Award 2012. So far Phyno was nominated for 15 Headies Award and he won 5, he was also nominated for City People Nigeria Entertainment Award 4 times. Phyno has over 28 nominations and 5 awards to his credit today.

5. Ice Prince

The fifth on our list of top 10 best rappers in Nigeria is Ice Prince. Born Panshak Henri Zamani in the city of Minna, Niger, Nigeria, his Musical Career success began in 2004 when he released his debut single “Extraordinary”. The single made a lot of noise in Abuja and Lagos and made it to the topped several music charts. Ice Prince has won many awards and notable among them are: Bet Award for Best Rap Act of the year 2013and Best Hip-hop Artiste of the year, Channel O Music Award for Most Gifted Hip-hop Video of the year, Bet Award for Best Rap Album, City People Entertainment Awards Song of the year and Eko FM\Radio Lagos Award for Young Artiste of the Year.

6. Falz

Folarin Falana known as Falz is a rapper, songwriter, and actor based in Nigeria. He released a single titled “Waz up Guy” in 2011 before he went on to release “Currency” and “High Class” which helped him to gain ground in The Nigerian Music Industry. He shot into limelight after his song titled “Marry me” won him a nomination in 2015 Nigerian Entertainment Awards as Best Collaboration of the year, Falz was also nominated in the Best Rap Act of the Year and Best New Act to Watch categories at the same event. Falz is currently the owner of an Independent record label called Bahd Guys Record. In January 2014, Falz was listed in tooexclusive’s Artist to Watch in 2014. Falz was ranked #9on notjustok’s list of The 10 Most Gifted Rappers in Nigeria 2014 On 31st of January 2015, he released a single titled “Ello Bae” which won him a nomination in the Best Street Hop Artiste of The Year category at the Headies in 2015. Falz’s awards and nominations also include Best Afro Hip-Hop Video at the 9th Nigeria Music Video Awards in 2016 and Best African New Comer Video and Best African Hip Hop Video at Watsup TV Africa Music Video Awards in the same year. Falz also won Best Actor in a Comedy Movie Series at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for his role as Segun in Funke Akindele’s TV Series Jenifer’s Diary.

 

7. Reminisce

His real name is Remilekun Abdulkalid Safaru but many know him by his stage names Reminisce and Alaga Ibile. He is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter, and singer from Ogun State and he can rap in both English and Yoruba. Reminisce is an internationally recognized artiste, music icon, and household name in the music industry today. His album “Alaga Ibile” which was released in 2013 featuring acts like Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, Naeto C, and Sosick was an instant hit album. The album sold more than one million copies before the end of 2014, in same year Time Magazine named him one of seven world rappers you should meet. Reminisce was the only hip-hop artist in all of Africa to have an album debut on Billboard Charts World Music Category at no.12.

8. Illbliss

His debut album is “Dat Ibo Boy” which he released in 2009, followed by “Oga Boss” in 2012, he released “Powerful” in 2014, the recent ones are”Illygaty 7057” 2016 and “Illy Bomaye” 2017. Illbliss won his first major award in 2008 at the Sound City Music Video Award as a solo artist for Best Hip-hop Video with his song “U Go Wound O”. Although this talented rap artist has been inactive in the rap world for some time, his evergreen and powerful album and song gave him a place in the list of the Top 10 rappers in Nigeria. Illbliss was nominated for the 2013 Headies Award for Best Rap Album, 2010 Award for Best Collaboration, Hip-hop World Revelation of the Year, and Best Rap Album. He won the Award of Best Hip-Hop Video in 2008 (Sound City Music Video Award), South-South Music Award for Most Popular Video for “Aiye Gan!” in 2009, and The NMWA Best Hip-hop Video in 2012.

9. Vector

He is known as Vector the Viper but is real name is Olanrewaju Ogunmefun. Vector is a rap artist, singer, and songwriter.  He has a voice that can be mistaken for that of American rappers because he has a nice flow and good command of English. Vector the Viper is the musician singing in the popular  Sprite Commercial that has aired on radio stations across Nigeria since 2009. His first official single was “Kilode”  which he released in 2009. His track “Champion” got him a nomination at the 2010 Nigerian Entertainment Award for “Best Collaboration with Vocals”. Vector won Lyrics On The Roll at The Headies in 2012 and Best Rap Single and Lyrics OnThe Roll in 2015. He won Nigeria Music Video Awards (NMVA) as Best Mainstream Hip-Hop Video in 2011 and Best Afro Hip-Hop Video in 2012. He has over 10 Awards and about 5 nominations to his credit today.

 NAETO C

Naetochukwu Chikwe popularly known as Naeto C, the Afro Beat Artist, Record Producer, and Nigerian rapper was born in Houston, Texas, his creativity and ingenuity gave him a place on the list of Top 10 Best Rappers in Nigeria. His first single from his album titled “You Know My P”, “Sitting on Top” was an immediate hit and creative work; it topped the chart from MTV base to Sound City for weeks. Naeto C has worked with artists like Dare Art Alade, Nkiru, Sasha, Disconnect, and GT the Guitarman. He was nominated for Artist of The Year and Album of the Year at The Headies in 2012. He has many awards to his credit and notable among them are Best New Artist from MTV Africa Music Award 2009, Video of the Year at Channel O Music Video Awards 2009, and Best New Musician T MTV Africa Music Award in 2008.
