About The National Youth Service Corps
NYSC was established on 22nd May 1973 after the civil war as an avenue and forum for the reconstruction, reconciliation, and rebuilding of the nation. It was created based on Decree No. 24 which stated that the scheme was created “with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity”.
Mode Of NYSC Operation
Corps members are posted to States different from their States of origin where it is anticipated that they mix with persons from a different tribe and ethnic groups, social and family backgrounds, and learn the culture of the indigenes residing in the location where they are posted. This deed is aimed at fostering peace and unity.
Nigerian Graduates are not fit for employment in any government organization and most private establishments until they have completed the mandatory one year service or they obtain the relevant exemption certificate. Graduates who are exempted from the service are those who have passed the age of thirty (30) and those with a physical disability or any form of impairment. Corps members have the opportunity to learn the cultures of other people during the service year.
Despite the beauty of this scheme, it has been heavily criticized by majority of Nigerian citizens as some see it as a waste of time and believed it no longer achieve its original aim to foster peace and unity among the youths and the nation at large; and have called for the cancelation and close down of the scheme.
