The first company of the Jumia group to launch was their e-commerce hub. It is an online website dedicated to shopping for electronics and fashion. It was set up as a direct rival to Kilimall and Konga. It started operations in the month of June, the year 2012 in the city of Lagos, Nigeria. This was then followed by the launch of Jumia Market which was formerly called Kaymu. It is a community based online market that began operations in the month of September 2012. Jumia Travel formerly known as Jovago which is an online hotel booking platform was then launched in Nigeria in the month of June 2013. Jumia House formerly known as Lamudi, Jumia Car formerly called Carmudi and Jumia Food formerly known as Hellofood are the next three subsidiaries of the Jumia group to be launched. Jumia Jobs and Jumia Deals which are the last two services under the umbrella of the Jumia group were launched in the month of April year, 2015.

After it was launched in the city of Lagos in the year 2012, it was not until 2014 that the company began entering into other African markets. The company opened offices in Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Cameroon, Algeria and Tunisia all in the year 2014. Jumia in the year 2015 raked in a whopping $234 million in revenue representing a 265% growth from its 2014 turnover. Currently, Jumia has over 126 operations spread across 14 countries on the African continent thus covering 90% of African GDP and well over 3 million customers. 2016 saw Jumia became the first unicorn on the African continent to be valued at over $1 billion. In the year 2018, the company has launched a lensing program through Jumiapay that allows its vendors access to loans.
