CONCLUSION ON THE FRSC SHORTLISTED CANDIDATES 2018/2019 FOR RECRUITMENT

Federal Road Safety Corps is an Agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria charged with the statutory responsibilities for road safety administration in Nigeria. The agency was founded in the year 1988 and operates in all states as well as the Federal Capital Territory. It is the lead agency in Nigeria on issues bordering on road safety administration and management. The statutory functions of the FRSC include: Making the highways safe for motorists and other road users, checking roadworthiness of vehicles, recommending works and infrastructures to eliminate or minimize accidents on the highways and also educating motorists and members of the public on the importance of road discipline on the highways.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE AGENCY

Before the establishment of the Federal Road Safety Commission in the year 1988, there was no concrete and sustained policy action to address the carnage on roads in Nigeria. Previous attempts to address this challenge were limited, discrete and isolated attempts by some of the states of the federation and individuals. Some of the notable efforts made to create a formidable road safety program in the country include the effort of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) between 1960 and 1965. Another is the noble effort of the Nigerian Army in the training its officers and men on road safety in the early 1970s. This laudable effort also contributed to road safety ideas and consciousness in Nigeria. The First Public Road Safety Campaign in Nigeria was initiated in the year 1972 by the Nigerian Army when it launched an annual Road Safety Week. The first concrete and deliberate policy in road safety in Nigeria came into place with the creation of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) by the then military government. The effect of this commission, however, was not sustained. In 1977, the Military Administration in charge of Oyo state in the South West region of Nigeria created the Oyo State Road Safety Corps. The agency made significant improvements in maintaining road safety and road discipline in the state. The efforts of the agency in OYO state lasted until 1983 when the federal government disbanded it. When continuous incidents of traffic accidents remained abated in the country, the Federal government in the year 1988 saw the need to establish the Federal Road Safety Corps to address this challenge. Despite the spirited efforts of this organization, there is a continued trend of traffic accidents on Nigerian roads and this placed Nigeria as one of the most traffic accident (RTA) in the world in 2013. In fact, the country ranked 1st in Africa that year.
