Before the birth of Naria, Nigeria made use of cowries, manilas, pounds, and shillings as a means of payment of goods and services. On January 1, 1973, the Central Bank of Nigeria introduced  Naira notes.

The Naria is printed by the Nigerian Security Printing and minting company and issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The ₦ 100 naira note emerged in December 1999.The ₦ 100 naira note is one of the most used currency among Nigerians to the extent it is now a daily phrase among public bus drivers and “conductors”. To celebrate Nigeria hundred years of existence, Former President Goodluck Jonathan unveiled a new ₦ 100 naira note ( Centenary ₦ 100 Naira note ) on the 12th of November, 2014.  The new ₦100 note still retained the iconic figure of  Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

  3. IT IS A DIGITAL NOTE: The centenary ₦100 note has a Quick Response Code (QRC) when the barcode is scanned with a smartphone it shows up history about Nigeria.
  4. IT IS FADING OUT OF. Due to the cashless policy, the Central Bank of Nigeria no longer prints ₦100 note. Many Nigerians have voiced out their displeasure on the scarcity of the note. if the ones in circulation become worn and torn out, it is a bye-bye to the ₦100 note.

WHO IS ON THE FACE ON THE ₦100 NOTE

The never changing Face on the ₦100 note is no other person than Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo. He was born on the 6th of March  1909. He was a dogged Politician, Seasoned lawyer, nationalist, Author, and statesman who played a vital role in Nigeria struggle for independence. Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo died on the 9th of May 1987.

  1. HE COINED THE WORD NAIRA: After much debate on what the currency should be called, Chief Obafemi Awolowo suggestion “Naria” which he extracted from the word “Nigeria'” was wholly accepted. 
  2. HE ERECTED THE FIRST SKYSCRAPER IN TROPICAL AFRICA: The ancient city of Ibadan is the home of a 24 story magnificent structure Called the Cocoa House.
  3. HE PIONEERS FREE HEALTH CARE AND EDUCATION: Chief Obafemi Awolowo was a philanthropist who pioneered free primary education and healthcare in Nigeria.
  4. HE ENJOYED POUNDED YAM AND OKRO SOUP: In an interview with Punch newspaper, his daughter Tokumbo Awolowo attested that his Favorite meal was pounded Yam and Okro soup.
  5. HE BUILT A STADIUM: The Liberty Stadium located in Ibadan is the first of its kind in Africa.
  6. HE WAS IMPRISONED: In 1963 Chief Obafemi Awolowo was found guilty of conspiring to overthrow the government of Nigeria and was sentenced to three years of imprisonment. During his time behind bars, his son who was on his way to visit him had an accident and died.

HE ESTABLISHED THE FIRST TELEVISION STATION  IN AFRICA: On October 1st, 1959, Nigerians shouted with joy when their black and white TV screens light up with a news Programme with the logo WNTV (Western Nigeria television) on the left side. WNTV is now called NTA ( National Television Authority).

HE WAS HIGHLY HONOURED: Chief Obafemi Awolowo was honoured with many chieftaincy titles, from  Odole of Ife, Asiwaju of Remo, Apesin of Osogbo, Asiwaju of Yoruba etc He was a Chief among chiefs and also the only Nigerian till date with a GCFR title and was never a president. GCFR stands for; Grand Commander of the of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
  9. HE CHANCELLOR TWO UNIVERSITIES: He was a Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the University of Ife which was named after him – O.A.U ( Obafemi Awolowo University).
